The National Trust for Historic Preservation has named the City of Columbus, Mississippi one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations.   Learn more >>

Welcome to the friendly city of Columbus, Mississippi. Whether you're relocating to our community just curious about life in a small southern city, we invite you to take a few minutes to discover a vibrant town that preserves its past and promotes its future.

If you like tree-lined streets and beautiful historic homes then be sure to visit the Southside. Our annual pilgrimage attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. The stately antebellum homes are lovingly cared for by their owners and are open year-round for tours. However, these homes are not just museums. In fact, if you're taking a driving tour, please be careful -- there are bound to be children at play.

If you're a history buff, you won't want to miss Friendship Cemetery. Dozens of prominent Mississippians are buried there as well as Union and Confederate soldiers from the Civil War. According to local historians it is here that Memorial Day got its start when the young women of the town decorated the graves of fallen soldiers on both sides of that great conflict.

Speaking of young women, the Mississippi University for Women is located in the heart of Columbus. Known for its top-notch nursing and teaching schools and more recently for its culinary arts department, MUW is recognized nationally as one of the best education bargains in the country. Don't worry guys, you can go there too.

Columbus is also home to Columbus Air Force Base, turning out nearly one-third of our nation's best-trained pilots. With more than 3,000 military and civilian employees, the base has a local economic impact of almost $250,000,000 annually. We are proud of the role we play in our nation's defense and embrace the men and women of CAFB, many of whom return to Columbus to retire.

If you love the outdoors, then you've come to the right place. We have some of the best deer and turkey hunting around. If you like fishing then you'll be glad to know Columbus hosts many large professional bass tournaments every year. Even if you're not a pro, you're sure to get a bite on the Tenn-Tom Waterway. The Tenn-Tom is also a great place to water ski or jet ski and is a popular place to spend a warm summer afternoon..

For the golfers, there are six courses within thirty minutes of Columbus, including Old Waverly, which was voted one of the top 100 courses in the United States. If you prefer watching rather than playing sports, we've got you covered there as well. Mississippi State University is right down the road; you can catch some of the best college sports in the country as the Bulldogs battle it out in the tough Southeastern Conference.

As you can see, we've got something for everyone. Perhaps what we've got the most of is Southern hospitality. It is alive and well in Columbus, Mississippi and we would be happy to share it with you if you visit.
